First Come, Last Served

In Matthew 20:1–16, Jesus tells a strange story about a vineyard owner who pays workers hired at the end of the day exactly what he pays those who worked from morning until evening. It doesn’t seem fair—and that is precisely the point.

In this message, Dylan Rees explores the difference between fairness and grace. In God’s economy, we do not simply receive what we have earned or what we deserve. We receive according to God’s generosity. As Dylan puts it, luck is unearned and unintended; grace is unearned but intended.

The workers hired first begin the day grateful simply to have been chosen. Their resentment only begins when they compare what they received with what others were given. That same temptation toward comparison can quietly rob us of gratitude.

Jesus offers another way: trust God’s generosity, recognize the grace already present in our lives, and learn to celebrate when others receive unexpected goodness. Because the good news is not that God gives us exactly what we deserve. The good news is that all of us have received far more than we deserve.
